In business and accounting, assets are economic resources owned by business or company. Any property or object of value that one possesses, usually considered as applicable to the payment of one's debts is considered an asset. Simplistically stated, assets are things of value that can be readily converted into cash. The balance sheet of a firm records the monetary value of the assets owned by the firm. It is money and other valuables belonging to an individual or business. Two major asset classes are tangible assets and intangible assets. Tangible assets contain various subclasses, including current assets and fixed assets. Current assets include inventory, while fixed assets include such items as buildings and equipment. Intangible assets are nonphysical resources and rights that have a value to the firm because they give the firm some kind of advantage in the market place. Examples of intangible assets are goodwill, copyrights, trademarks, patents and computer programs, and financial assets, including such items as accounts receivable, bonds and stocks.

Does putting assets in a Revocable Living Trust allow a Senior to qualify for Medicare?
Q. This is for a senior who wants to leave her assets to her grandaughter but she won't have anything left to leave if she continues to have to pay all her medical expenses. She is in her 80s.

A. If you mean Medicaid, I believe the "revocable" part of this trust structure will disallow its exclusion from her estate - meaning she will have to include the amount of the trust in determining whether or not she qualifies for Medicaid. In addition, there is a 3-year look back period, so if she makes any estate transfers today, she will need to wait 3 years before applying for Medicaid for those assets to be excluded.

What is a good percentage of debt to total assets in personal finance?
Q. I think that I would feel comfortable to have 30% of my assets in debt, but I never had debt before, so I am not sure about that. For instance, if my total assets are $100,000, then I would feel confident in getting $30,000 in debt.

A. It really depends on more than simply assets and debt, and it also depends on what those assets and debt are. For instance, you have greater leverage (debt capacity) if you own your own home or some real estate. Banks deal in real estate all the time, and they know the market and what to do with the property should they have to foreclose. However, if your assets consist of stuff like a car, sports memorabilia, a rare stamps collection, etc., you probably don't want to (and can't) go into as much debt. These assets don't have well defined values or steady buyers. You'd be hard-pressed to find a lender willing to take these assets as collateral, so they're not going to help you much. To me, the most important aspect (aside from home… [cont.]

What is better to pay taxes on, income, inventory or buy assets?
Q. If I had $10,000 in income at the end of a year, which would be wiser to do. (1) Purchase more inventory and if so, would I have to pay taxes on that? (2) Pay taxes on the income. (3) Purchase assets? This is based on a company in Florida which buys and resales merchandise that is shipped mostly out of state.

A. The previous posters are both correct. Buying inventory only increases the assets on your balance sheet, it's not a cost of goods sold until you sell the inventory item. So, you should think about purchasing some new assets (computer, furniture, equipment) or prepay some expenses by 12/31/06 (rent, utilities, etc.)...assuming that your business is on a cash basis.
