In the investment world, a share of stock (also referred to as equity share) represents a share of ownership in a corporation (company).

In the plural, stocks is often used as a synonym for shares especially in the United States, but it is less commonly used that way outside of North America.[1]

In the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Australia, stock can also refer to completely different financial instruments such as government bonds or, less commonly, to all kinds of marketable securities.[2]

Can a private company voluntarily publish information about itself using a website?
Q. I know it is against the law for a private company to advertise the sale of debt or equity securities to the public, but can a private firm choose to make its periodic reports accessible using a website? If it's a MAYBE, then under what conditions would it be permissible? It's for the purpose of informing current investors and assuring them that the information they are receiving is consistent with the information supplied to other investors and their advisors.

Scottrade - Short Sale and Buys - what is the "real" equity left?
Q. Ok so for example I have a 1000$ account. I short sale 500$ worth of stock and I buy 500$ worth of stock (different security). My purchasing power is still 1000$ according to scottrade. This can't be true? Other wise I could buy 1 million $ and short 1 million $ and it would still say a have 1000$ in equity? Anyone run into this?

A. When you short stock, they have the cash in your account on hold. In your question, you seem to be mixing the terms "purchasing power" and "equity". Buying or selling something doesn't change your equity. 500 worth of stock or 500 worth of cash is still 500 in equity. Your equity will change with price changes. Your purchasing power is not "still" 1000. When you had cash only, you would have been able to purchase 2000 because margin accounts allow 2-to-1 leverage. Congratulations! You seem to have found the secret to making money in the stock market regardless of whether it goes up or down. This is the technique I use myself, to great success. If you don't really understand the potential power of what you are doing, email me… [cont.]
